Wasting Money

Initially we could not find a furnished place.  We actually had a lease agreement filled out for an unfurnished place until at the last minute a furnished place in the same building came available for cheaper.

In the mean time I had purchased some items.  I bought an air mattress, pump, towels, sheets, pillows, duvet, and a duvet cover.  I wanted to cover my basis for camping out in the new place.  I also found a couch and two chairs on gumtree (same as kijiji in Canada).

When we found out we were moving into a furnished place I figured I would return/sell everything…

The Couch and Chairs:

I was planning on posting these back on gumtree and trying to make a profit.  I bought them for $100 which was a steal compared to the other options.  Well actually it was $120 because I gave my flatmate $20 for gas.  Instead of selling them I ended up moving them into our already furnished place.  Sounds crazy and it is.  Our flatmates actually want to buy them from us because they might move into an unfurnished place when we leave.  For now we are using them which turned out amazing because the couch/chairs that came with the place are NOT comfortable.  Funds have not been exchanged but if for some reason our flatmates decide they don’t want to buy them I will sell them before we leave.  In the mean time; at least I get to enjoy a fantastic couch.  My husband actually asked if we could ship them home… they are that comfy.

Everything Else:

I returned the air mattress and pump ($50).  Bedding and towels are also included but I kept the stuff I bought.  From a financial stand point I probably should have returned everything but the stuff that was provided was not ideal.  If everything was similar to what you would use in a hotel I would have been fine; it was not the case.  I bought everything at kmart and at least it was cheap.  Here is what I spent:
Towels:                               $10 ($5 each)
Face Clothes:                     $5 (pack of 4)
Bath Mat:                          $7
Sheets:                               $29
Pillows:                             $12 ($6 each)
Duvet:                               $8 (that’s why it needed a cover
Duvet Cover:                   $15

Total:                                   $86

I can’t bring anything home with me so I probably should not have splurged but I did.  Now all I can do is enjoy everything while I am here!  Anyone else splurge on something they should not have?
